Brooklyn Bowl Blows Our Minds
Let the SS be the first to tell you that Brooklyn Bowl is one of the most incredible places on Earth!
Not only is it a 16-lane bowling alley, but the 23,000 square foot venue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, also features a massive stage, with a state-of-the-art sound system, and room for 600 fans! (Looking at the photo above, the performance area would be just to the left of those plush couches.)
Our buddy Pete Shapiro -- one of the owners of Brooklyn Bowl, who used to run the Wetlands, the epicenter for jam bands in NYC -- recently invited the SS and twenty of our friends out to roadtest Brooklyn Bowl. While throwing rocks, Pete turned down the lights, cued up the Last Waltz on those TV screens at the end of the lanes, cranked the volume to 11, and tapped a fresh keg from the Brooklyn Brewery, which is next door. What ensued was a surreal rock & bowl experience!
The alley will open pretty soon, and while the only thing booked now is a Lebowski Fest in September, expect a slew of your favorite acts to pass through the doors.
Trust us, it's gonna be sick!

Michael Jackson, Alive and Well
From then on, things got weird. He moved into an amusement park. His nose disappeared. His skin became whiter. He dangled Blanket over the balcony. He could no longer perform like he once had, and no longer live up to the larger-than-life persona that he created. When you've reached the pinnacle, though, where else is there to go?
When we got wind yesterday that he was rushed to the hospital, we turned on the TV only to find out that he was dead. In a way, the news was almost comforting to us. There is no doubt that MJ was a tortured soul. He was robbed of his childhood, and there aren't enough gold records in the universe that can cure that kind of psychological damage. It pains us even to listen to those Jackson 5 records, when he and his brothers were programmed to perform, in fear of the whip.
We're pretty sure MJ is resting, finally, in peace. And it may just be the first sense of peace he's ever known.
The media will drag out his death to no end. Friends, family, associates and prognosticators will blab on and on about what killed him, and what he'd lived for.
But we won't be paying any attention.
Michael Joseph Jackson is officially dead, but in our humble opinion that guy died a long time ago.
The great Michael Jackson -- the King of Pop, and the brilliant showman that created Off the Wall, Thriller and Bad -- is immortal.

Wilco Kills in Berkeley, Tweedy Despises Hippies
For the last week we've been back in our hometown, San Francisco.
One of the best parts about growing up here was the opportunity to go see shows at the Greek Theater, over the Bay Bridge, on the UC campus in Berkeley.
Last night we went returned to the old haunt, to see Wilco, and it was a beautiful thing.
"I think this is our favorite place in the world to play," Jeff Tweedy told the packed house, before launching into "California Stars."
But a horrible thing happened to Tweedy on Saturday. His son, Spencer, went shopping in Berkeley, and returned dressed head-to-toe in tie-dye. "Look what you've done to my son, you dirty hippies!" Tweedy cried, as Spencer took a bow in his tie-dye gear. As he ran off again, dad screamed, "Now go take a bath." (Spencer is, like, six inches taller than Jeff!)
Tweedy was full of funny quips last night: Before the new cut, "Deeper Down," he announced, "Glenn

The Latest from the Black Keys: Drummer
The dudes in the Black Keys -- Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney -- are two of the hardest working mofos in the biz. They love writing, recording, performing and collaborating more than anyone we've ever met!
So when BK guitarist Auerbach released his AMAZING debut solo album earlier this year, Keep It Hid, we wrote an email to drummer Carney asking him when his solo project would be hitting the shelves. He fired us back an email with an MP3 attached from his brand new project, Drummer.
It's not exactly a solo project, but Drummer features five Ohio-based drummers, who mostly adopt new instruments on their debut, Feel Good Together, due in September on Carney's label, Audio Eagle. Carney plays bass, Jamie Stillman from Teeth of the Hydra is on guitar, Stephen Clements of Houseguest sings and plays keys, Greg Boyd from Ghostman and Sandman gets to play drums, and John Finley from Beaten Awake plays bass.
The guys started playing together in February, and within two months had collected all the songs for their debut. "We decided that our time would be better spent making music rather than making snowmen," says Carney.
Check out Feel Good Together's title track, below. Click the jump for October tour dates!
Drummer -- "Feel Good Together"
Oh, and buy the way, a few weeks ago we went down to the Lower East Side to hang with the Black Keys while the recorded a few new songs for their next project.
For the time being, we've been sworn to secrecy about the two artists they collaborated with in the studio that night.
Let us tell you right now that in your wildest dreams you'd never guess who, but believe us when we tell you that the shit will blow your balls off.

Sara Watkins Enters the S.S.
We were extremely psyched that Sara Watkins -- the gorgeous voice and killer fiddle that makes Nickel Creek -- stopped by the Smoking Section to perform a few tunes from her solo debut album.
But we almost lost it when we spotted Sara's keyboard player... the Heartbreakers' Benmont Tench!!!!!!! Holy shitballs! Tench sits in with Watkins on many of her performances at Largo, in L.A. They're buddies.Rounding out the trio is fellow Creeker Sean Watkins (Sara's bro) on guitar.
Sara's self-titled album was produced by some guy named John Paul Jones. In addition to the great Tench, the guests on the disc include Gillian Welch, David Rawlings and drummer Pete Thomas (Elvis Costello).
Sara wrote a majority of the tracks, like "My Friend" and "All This Time," which you can check out live renditions of below. On her album she also covers Tom Waits, Jon Brion and Jimmie Rodgers. "Long Hot Summer Days," was written by John Hartford.
Check 'em out!

Brother JT Self-Releases Book
Now the brother man has a new collection of tunes, Any Stort in a Porm. Available as a self-released CDR, the songs on Stort are inspired directly from the lyrics and meandering stream of consciousness that is The Orange Journal. The 134-page book which contains drawings, words and collage by Brother JT might have been inspired by Jung’s Red Book but at $20 is a slightly more affordable affair. And it comes with a free copy of Stort.
Oh, and check out the Brother’s interweb presence as the host of Tripping Ballz With Brother JT. Seriously.

Rihanna American Idol Performance Video Rock Star 101
– Rihanna wearing a black leather catwoman outfit took the “American Idol” stage last night to perform her latest single “Rock Star 101″ .
The singer puts on a heck of a show, of course (her singing was bad as usual), she totally owned the stage, she crawled on floor, vanished into a smoke filled area and reemerged with an electric guitar (can she really play?).
I have to give her credit for making things look effortless.
The highlight of the performance was when she threw away her mike into the audience towards the end .

Jennifer Hudson New Album 2010
– Jennifer Hudson has been busy prepping for the release of her new album. The star is reportedly as far as ten songs deep into her newest album, which will be her second album since gaining notoriety after appearing on the “American Idol” television series.
“I think it will definitely be a different direction and I’m so excited about that. I want this album to feel good,” Hudson said.
Hudson has been rumored to be working with a number of different popular artists on her newest release. Some of the more prominent names that have been rumored to be collaborating with Hudson include Ne-Yo and Stargate. There is currently no release date for the album, but it is expected to be released next fall, more specifically, it appears that the label is shooting for a September release. As stated by Hudson herself, the album will be heading in a different direction than her critically acclaimed first album.
Hudson previously won an Oscar for her role in the hit movie “Dream Girls” that also starred Beyonce Knowles and Eddie Murphy. She is also rumored to be working on a number of film related projects. One of those films is a reported biopic that is based on Winnie Mandela, former wife of Nelson Mandela. Production on the film is expected to begin sometime this summer barring any setbacks.
“It’s film and music right now, working on the album, but it won’t be out until September,” Hudson said earlier this week.
Hudson recently made headlines after fans noticed an incredible amount of weight loss. Hudson lost weight after joining the “Weight Watchers” program and is currently serving as a celebrity endorser for the company.
